Llama-Gro & Alpaca-Gro Milk Replacer for Llama or Alpaca Crias

The Llama-Gro  & Alpaca-Gro milk replacer was formulated to provide the nutritional needs of crias (baby Llamas) and Alpacas.

This all milk product is able to mimic the dam's milk and allow a great growth to the offspring.

Feeding Directions

  • An average Cria (baby llama) weight is 20-30 pounds at birth, which looks like all neck and legs.

  • A normal Cria is usually up within 30 minutes of birth nursing and trying to walk, and in some cases, run, within the first day.

"Not only did the milk replacer save the life of the newborn llama (Destiné) but the rapidity in which it was made available to us was greatly appreciated".

Colostrum

  • All newborns should receive Colostrum (first mothers milk) in the first 24 hours following birth.

  • This will provide protection against future infections, particularly if the colostrum is fed before 12 hours.

  •  If the mothers colostrum is not available, the second option is to use goats colostrum. If also not available, use a commercial colostrum replacer product and consult a veterinarian.

General recommendations

  • Start feeding milk replacer once newborn has received colostrum.

  • Quantities offered should be adjusted to weight. Weight gain should be about 220-450g/day.

  • Any change in the feeding schedule should be done with judgement, according to growth, size and stool consistency.

  • Frequent feeding of small amounts will decrease chances of digestive upsets.

  • Weigh crias regularly to ensure that milk intake is adequate

  • Reconstituted milk may be refrigerated up to 24 hours. Discard any unused portion after 24 hours.

  • The milk replacer solution can be served in a nipple bottle or in an open bucket (older than 2 weeks).

  • Do not leave the milk in an open bucket for more than 2 hours.

  • Clean ALL feeding utensils and equipment after each feeding: rinse in lukewarm water, wash with a detergent in hot (80oC) water, rinse with clean water (ideally a weak bleach solution) and dry thoroughly with a ‘clean’ towel.

  • Consult your veterinarian for any signs of disease, fever, parasites, …

Starter ration, water, forage and weaning

  • If a starter ration is available, offer small quantities daily from about 3 months of age.

  • Offer good quality roughage (leafy material) and/or pasture on a free choice basis.

  • Fresh, clean water should be always be available, particularly when consuming a significant amount of solids.

NOTE: Store this product in a cool dry location, protected from the sun. To maintain freshness, keep partially used bag closed tightly after opening and store in a plastic container.

CAUTION: Directions for use must be carefully followed.
